Peacefully at home, on the 26th of July, 2010, at the age of 89 years, the former Thelma Ellen Cecilia Moyer of Niagara Falls. Beloved wife of the late Norman Rule MacGregor Mitchinson of Southampton. Cherished mother of Ronald and his wife Adele and sister-of-the-heart to Marlene Titon of Kincardine. Also a loving mother to Timothy and his wife Eveline of Niagara-on-the-Lake and grandmother to Derek and Steven. Honourary grandma of Alexander Bailey and Dayna Bailey-Bennett of Niagara Falls. Special sister-in-law to Harry Mitchinson of St. Catharines, Jack Mitchinson and his wife Helen of Pain Court, and Annabelle and her husband Thomas Sauder of Niagara Falls. Warmly remembered by several nieces and nephews and many family friends. Predeceased by her first husband Gordon J. Smith of Niagara Falls, her parents Grant and Rose Moyer of Niagara Falls, brother Ken O. Moyer and his wife Anna of Victoria, BC, sister-in-law Gloria Mitchinson of St. Catharines, and Donald Mitchinson and his companion Amy Bell of Niagara Falls.
Thelma was a modern career woman before it was fashionable to do so, working outside the home as a cosmetologist at Pharmacies in Niagara Falls, while still providing a good, loving home for her husband and two sons. Thelma also supported her husband Norm's work in establishing The Committee of 1000, the first Anti Pollution Control Group in North America in the 60's. Thelma and Norm retired to Southampton, were she became active in the community with the Women's Institute and the Hospital Auxiliary. Thelma had a keen sense of humour, a ready smile and a zest for life. Someone once commented, that in her later years, she was a young person in an old person's body. You could see that impish spirit when she went on a motorcycle ride with her son Ron to celebrate her 89th birthday on April 13th, 2010. Thelma was a Grand Lady and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service to be held at the W. Kent Milroy Port Elgin Chapel, 510 Mill St., Port Elgin, with an Intement service in Niagara Falls at the Lundy's Lane Cemetery, all to be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions to the Victoria Order of Nurses (VON) Grey Bruce Branch - the Kincardine Team or to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
