It is with great sorrow today that I hear of the passing of John. He was a true friend to all who knew him, especially a young stubble jumper from Saskatchewan who arrived in Port Elgin many years ago. He was like a second father to me while I was so far from home. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Cobean family at this very sad time.
You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Farewell John.
Love,
Tom Cannon

To Dave, Gary, Jim, Brad, Nancy and families. We were so sorry to hear the news. What a wonderful husband, father and friend John was to all who crossed his path. We will always remember his big smile and firm handshake. He was a pleasure to be around and a true friend to all. His great laugh and big hugs were always a welcome whenever and wherever we met him. We always enjoyed his company at the curling club. He always had a proud story to tell of his children and grandchildren. We know all the good memories will help you through this very difficult time. To John's children and grandchildren, no words can express the loss of a wonderful man, father, grandfather, friend. Over the years he has produced precious, special or just good old memories for one and all to share. Working at Elgin Lodge, John had made my shifts enjoyable and entertaining. He has touched the hearts of many, staff, residents and volunteers. His smile, his hugs, his jokes and antics will be greatly missed by all. John's prayers of reuniting with his beloved wife have been answered. John has not left us, he will always be with one and all in our hearts and memories. Rest in peace John, I miss you already. We are thinking of your family at this sad time. Your father became an instant and great friend to his Saskatchewan cousins. We so value our visits and time spent with him. He was a most enjoyable, happy, smiling, gentle man and a great host. His phone calls to say "How are you doing?" and to update us on his family, that he was so proud of. His calls will be greatly missed.
Our sincere sympathy,
Your Cousins, Don & Jean Cairns

Dear Dave & Barb, Gary & Carol Ann, Jim & Rona, Nancy & John, Brad & Bonnie and all members of your families:
Charlie & I were saddened to learn of the sudden death of your father, John, after such a brief illness. He was such a wonderful family man and had great pride in all your accomplishments. His heart overflowed with love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Your family circle has lost another link but he will suffer no more and is now in the presence of his beloved Jean 'Red'. Way back when we first met them it took us a while to realize who 'Red' was but then understood it was his special endearment for your Mom.
At a 'Carr' family day at Bennett & Jean's cottage in Oyster Bed during John & Jean's only trip to PEI John remarked that he wouldn't mind if the Carr boys were his brothers. We weren't sure if being a little under the influence was colouring his opinion at the time but both Jean and John were taken in by the pastoral beauty, the fishing ports and the slower pace of Island life. We know that trip had a special place in his book of memories. Our book of memories includes the one time Charlie and I arrived, practically unannounced, at the Cobean family cottage in Restoule and were taken in by both of them for three days of absolute bliss. Nancy and John, bless their hearts, surreptitiously took off for home with their family including Jack, the Jack Russell terrier. Nancy and John shortened their holiday at the lake so we could stay and we were treated like family by two very special people. No one could make pies by the dozen like Jean and her biscuits were to die for.
John's work ethic was a wonderful example for each of you and it stood him in good stead within the wider community. He was a very successful farmer and took much satisfaction in talking about the blood lines of his herd of Holsteins. Following the herd dispersal sale he talked about them, about the purchasers and where in Ontario they had gone. We think part of him went with his 4-legged friends.
Each of you have succeeded in your endeavours and are setting a similar example for your family members - that hard work never hurts anyone. Stand tall and remember him with all the love you have in your hearts for the wonderful Dad you had.
In these difficult times when you are trying to understand the 'whys' remember there is a loving God who has opened his arms and gathered him in to be with Him in a better place. Even though we are separated by many miles and it is not possible for us to be with you, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. May God's love surround each of you and give you peace.
Charlie & Anna Carr

I am so sorry to hear of Johns passing. I will always be known as Jeannie's sister. Every time we met your Dad and Mom would say Hi Ruthie Jeanies sister. That is not a bad think. I was lucky enough to visit with them at the cottage when visiting Jean and Charlie. I will never forget that big glass full of tooth brushes...I ask how do they know whos is who? John said they all know but what is the difference if they get the wrong one. That I will always remember and it showed me what a close family you have. Keep that going and with all your own memories you have it will help you get thru this difficult time.
I know that John's prayers have finally been answered to be with his beloved Jean and darling Kaitlyn. I can almost hear that Jet Ski starting up with three on it flying thru the clouds.
I am sorry I didn't know in time to attend the funeral but my thoughts and prayers are with the Cobean Family.
Love Ruth

Gary/Dave: My cousin Joicelyn advised me of your father's passing. Not sure if you remember me but I remember you and your Dad so well. He was a great guy with a big smile, a booming voice and a big wave every time I remember him. He gave me the odd ride home when I needed it and I always remember that kindness from John.
Just wanted you to know I was thinking of you at this time.

I was shocked to hear about John's passing. I got to know John at Elgin Lodge when my son Clay and I would visit. John was always a gentle giant, who always had nothing but kind words and a warm handshake whenever you saw him. I had seen just before he took ill and was shocked that he passed so quickly, when he seemed as sturdy as a tree and like he would outlast everyone. The world lost a great man but like my grandfather, who passed soon after, we must be comforted by the fact that they didn't suffer for long. Though I never got to meet his family, I am sure that they will be comforted by many great memories of a great man.
Andrew
